Top Tables

Author: Jackie D'Antonio

Do you want your table settings to make a big impression? We got the inside scoop from Meg Critchell, of Meg Critchell Events in New York, on the latest trends in centerpieces, where to splurge and where to save, and how to make the most of your locale.

Q: What sort of trends are you seeing in table settings at destination weddings?

A: Square tables with soft arrangements to counter the harsh lines are becoming very popular. Centerpieces are starting to shift from one large piece in the center of the table to several smaller arrangements, or one medium-sized component with two smaller pieces on the side. Square vases and mint julep cups are popular because they come in a huge variety of sizes and can work with a lot of different florals.

People are also breaking away from tradition by not using the same setting for each table. Some brides are choosing a few styles they like and repeating them in series, and others are going as far as using a unique setting for each table. I think having something interactive on the table, like an instrument, is a great idea; it involves guests in the festivities.

Q: If you're having your destination wedding at a hotel, are you limited to their china or are there other options?

A: Brides don't have to stick with what the hotel has available. Of course, that is the least expensive option, but if you're willing to shell out a few extra dollars there are plenty of choices. Start by going over your plan with the hotel; some properties that don't have large amounts of one kind of china might be willing to mix and match to accommodate your guests. At most island destinations, hotels are willing to work with each other, and they can borrow dishes from another resort if you prefer that particular style. There are also rental companies in a lot of destinations -- they generally have several different styles to choose from. And there is always the option of shipping dishes to your destination if you can't find anything locally to suit your style.

Q: Do a lot of brides ship things from home, or can you generally find what you need at the destination?

A: It depends on how particular the bride is about the details. There are a lot of reception items that may be hard to find on smaller islands. For instance, you won't really have a lot of luck locating certain kinds of tablecloths or chairs in the Caribbean, so a lot of people ship those. I always tell my brides that if they have anything custom-made, such as shell place cards and guest gift bags, they should ship some extras because items can always get broken or lost. I can't emphasize that enough.

Q: Does the reception time tend to affect the formality of the setting?

A: Not necessarily -- it depends more on the location. Weddings on the beach are usually less formal then weddings in a New York hotel. But beach brides can also find ways to add a little formality while still staying true to the environment. Lighting plays a huge roll in the feel of any reception.

Q: Where can brides cut corners if they are looking to save a little cash? And where do you think it's important to splurge?

A: Centerpieces are a good place to save money. Candles are inexpensive and can create beautiful ambiance. It is also important to take advantage of your surroundings. Incorporate things that you find in nature: shells at the beach, leaves and pinecones for a fall wedding in the mountains. You can be precise with the candles so the natural elements don't necessarily have to match.
One area where I would splurge is on the individual place settings. Impress people with what is right in front of them. Big, nice napkins (I like the 24-inch size) and personal place cards are important details. When the details are more intimate, it makes the reception feel more like a home than a big hotel.
