Travel Agent Neither Toll nor the Park Service would release details of their agreement, but Robbins said the $7.5 million "is going to be the bulk" of the payment. Other sources put the price at close to $9 million.

Travel agents obtain some of their information from the same sources as online booking sites such as Orbitz and Travelocity. Hotel Reservation Instrumental in quashing the deal was a letter-writing campaign - by schoolchildren.

London Hotel Booking "I remember [company chief executive officer] Bob Toll telling me he was getting letters from schoolchildren all over the country telling him not to ruin Valley Forge Park," said U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel, whose district in 2001 included Valley Forge Park, but does not now. Hoeffel, who also helped get the federal funds earmarked for the deal, said he persuaded Toll and the Park Service to begin talking.

Discount Travel Bob Toll had not been interested in selling the land to the Park Service until he started getting those letters, according to Hoeffel. Then Valley Forge Overlook "became something that he did not feel was worthwhile for Toll Bros. to pursue," the congressman said. "His view was it was not worth it to his company and to his business to pursue this in light of the lobbying that was bringing criticism... to his company."

Orlando Hotel The Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Sierra Club organized rallies, candlelight vigils and collected more than 2,000 signatures on petitions urging the federal government to the rescue.

Booking Agency Yesterday, Hoeffel said the Sierra Club "deserves a lot of the credit." Indeed, its members were rejoicing.

International Travel Medical "We are delighted that the Park Service and Toll Bros. have been able to reach an understanding that will safeguard this land and preserve it as parkland," said Robin Mann, the group's wetlands expert who led the opposition to the development. "I think it was the outcry from the public that made the difference."

New York Hotel She said the two-year-plus fight helped shed light on the amount of privately held acreage within the park (500 counting the Toll land) and on the financial difficulties that the park faces in not only buying land, but operating and maintaining what it already owns.

Historians and archaeologists also are eager to uncover artifacts from the little-explored area.
