The Antipolis (1977) This fun shore dive is also great as a first wreck dive. The site is well protected from the wind and quite shallow. The Antipolis was a Greek oil tanker of almost 25 000 tons built in 1959. She was wrecked on 29 July 1977 while being towed to the breaker s yard together with the Romelia. You can see the engine parts, ladders portholes of this wreck. There is also a sunken bulldozer if that is your sort of thing. This is a protected marine reserve and crayfish are plentiful. The Aster (1998) The Aster was a retired east coast lobster catcher that was to be towed in for scrap. She is 27m long and weighed 340 gross tonnes. It was decided to sink her next to the Katsu Maru to extend the artificial reef there. She was stripped and cleaned of her oil and a lot of effort was made to make the Aster as diver friendly as possible. All hatches and doors were removed to allow safe and easy access for those experienced divers who want to enter the wreck. She was finally sunk on 8 August 1998. It took her approximately 4 hours to sink after two of her seacocks were pulled. RMS Athens This site is quite shallow and as a result the surge can be quite strong here. The RMS Athens was a steamer of the Union Steamship Co. She was wrecked on 17 May 1865 with the loss of the whole crew of 29. While trying to steam out of the bay to escape the storm the heavy seas swamped the boiler fires and the ship drifted to its present site. Boss 400 This is definetly an advanced dive since there can be quite a lot of surge at the site. Divers need to be very careful not to get swept into any sharp protruding metal pieces when diving this site. Much of the Boss is still visible above water and you ll often find somebody having a picknick on the deck. Machinery like forklifts and bulldozers are strewn over the seabed around the wreck. The Clan Stuart is about 4km from the traffic circle in Fish Hoek on the road to Simon s Town. The wreck is close to shore but is in a restricted diving area. This means you have to get permission to dive it from the Naval headquarters in Simon s Town (or else). The Clan Stuart is about 50m offshore with easy entry and exit points. How to get there:

Froggy Pond is in a little bay 5km from Simons Town on the road to Cape Point. (Just before the A Frame) Park on the opposite side of the road and kit up there or on the lawn in front of the beach. Geldkis Geldkis is the furthest rock out from Sandy Cove and involves quite a swim. It is recommended only for fit, experienced divers and should ideally be dived in a group. It should also be dived only in perfect conditions as the swim can be very tiring in choppy sea and there can be quite a surge around the blinder in a big sea. The dive site is on the outer side of the rock or around the blinder, which breaks a few metres out to sea from the rock. You can also just dive around the rock if you prefer, there is a lot to see, and not everbody cares to swim this far in the Atlantic s cold water. On the blinder you will find anemones of varying colours, many species of nudibranches and plenty of crayfish. Shy octopuses can also be found hiding in crevices and overhangs in the reef. This dive is best done as an outing by swimming out to the site, diving and surfacing with about half your air left and then swimming to the flat rock where you can warm up in the sun for the long swim back. Justin s Caves This is a very exciting dive with large underwater caverns and beautiful swimthroughs for both advanced and open water divers. The surge can be very strong through the caves when a swell is running.
