The cradle of Free AmericaMassachusetts is a small sate on the North-East of the Unites States. It's 32 times smaller than Texas in area, but had played a very significant role in American history. It is this very place where the first settlers from Europe arrived in XVII century.
The name Massachusetts comes from the name of the Indian tribe Massachusett ("masa" - "big" and "wachusett" - "mountain"). In November 1620 English ship "Mayflower" arrived to this coast. There were only 106 people. They came here in the hope of the new life, but only the half of them had survived the first winter in their new home. They established the first English settlement in America - Plymouth. Boston, the capital of the state was founded in 1630. More than a century later, Boston was the first colony, which rebelled against the power of the Britain. "Boston tea-drinking", when the cargo of the English tea was drawn by protesting against high taxes Boston citizens, is one of the most important events in American history. During several centuries Boston has become a new home for many exiles from Europe, especially England and Ireland. In XIX century, when Ireland was surviving hunger, thousands of its inhabitants moved here. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States and is one of the most important financial centers on the East of the country. Boston has gained a reputation of the city of "intellectual elite". It boasts American best university - Harvard. All in all Boston has about 70 colleges and universities. Boston is considered to be the motherland of the American aristocracy. Old district called Beacon hill with its narrow streets, XIX century mansions of dark brick still remind of that times. Places, somehow connected with battles, Constitution, Independence declaration are called "Freedom Trail". It includes Boston Common Park, monument to the heroes of the battle with English troops at Bunker Hill, The State House, Granary Burying Ground cemetery, Benjamin Franklin statue. Massachusetts is the state of symbols. The main symbol of Boston is Golden kettle (volume more than 900 liters). Plymouth boasts the remains of the granite rock where acoording to a legend landed the first settlers. Cranberry is another symbol of this state. Massachusetts is the main exporter of this berry. Boston has always been one of the most educated and developed cities of the United States. The first underground station in America was opened here in 1898. Boston isn't rich in natural resources, but it's the city of the very successful people. While New York and Philadelphia struggled for the title of the leading commercial city, Boston has become the cultural capital of the United States.
