The Hyatt Comes to St. Lucia

The Hyatt Comes to St. Lucia

Author: David Swanson

The 284-room Hyatt Regency St. Lucia is an island unto itself -- one that might even tempt visitors to stay put rather than sample St. Lucia's many other charms.

The Caribbean's newest Hyatt resort, which opened in spring, offers everything a weary soul could hope for: a soothing spa, private beach, lavish lagoon-style pool, an ice cream parlor, a half-dozen restaurants offering cuisine that spans the globe, tennis, golf privileges, a workout facility and trips to nearby Pigeon Island National Park. You can even have a massage in an outdoor gazebo
The spacious, standard rooms will satisfy every whim: plantation-style antique reproduction furnishings, native art, cable TV, a mini bar, bathrobes and views of the Atlantic Ocean, Carib-bean Sea or Rodney Bay. Or choose the fourth-floor Regency Club level, which offers a concierge area with food service -- or one of the 24 swim-up rooms that boast private free-form swimming pools connected to the main pool and terraces (guests pay a premium for being able to act out their Esther Williams fantasies in private).

The resort's main restaurant -- Admiral Rodney's, a much-needed addition to the local culinary scene -- serves an eclectic menu conceived around the British Admiral Sir George Rodney's globetrotting adventures. His travels to India are commemorated with a tandoor oven that bakes naan (flatbreads) and chicken tandoori; French, English, and Caribbean flavors also find their way into various dishes.
The island's first 18-hole golf course is located just off property -- an overhaul of the old nine-hole St. Lucia Golf & Country Club -- and all those who stay at the Hyatt have playing privileges. With 18,000 square feet of meeting space, the Hyatt is already attracting business conventions that might have had trouble finding adequate facilities on St. Lucia in the past. And in 2001, the hotel is scheduled to open the island's first casino in a 10,000-square-foot wing.

Standard rooms at the Hyatt start at US$230-$380, low and high season, respectively (rates don't include 18-percent service charge and government tax). Swim-up rooms cost US$390-$525. For more information and reservations, call 800-55-HYATT, or the hotel directly at 758-451-1234.
