Rods and Reels For Kids

The charitable affiliate of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club, the Palm Beach County Fishing Foundation (PBCFF) is initiating a new program that will put refurbished fishing rods and reels in the hands of children whose families can't afford to buy fishing tackle. However, public support for the Rods & Reels For Kids program is needed in order for the concept to be successful.

Travel Agency Here's how the program works: South Florida anglers are encouraged to donate unwanted or broken rods and reels to the PBCFF. All contributions are tax deductible, and donors will receive a PBCFF letter acknowledging their donation. Rods and reels can be dropped off at the West Palm Beach Fishing Club located at 201 Fifth Street, West Palm Beach (please call the club at 561-832-6780 in advance of your visit to ensure that someone is at the clubhouse). WPBFC members Jim Ewing of Singer Island and Jim Burgess of West Palm Beach are volunteering their time to help coordinate the new program. The two Jims (Ewing and Burgess) will pick up the donated tackle from time to time and make repairs to the gear in order to make each refurbished outfit operational. Many of the donations will be cannibalized for parts, so even damaged tackle is appreciated.

To avoid being labeled as "fishing impaired, " be sure to select a reel and rod combination that is properly matched and balanced. Don’t pair up a light action spinning reel with a heavy duty spinning rod, or combine a small baitcaster with a big game trolling rod. Use common sense and put together a matched and balanced outfit. And whatever you do, be sure not to use a conventional reel on a spinning rod or vice versa.

Flight Booking Once enough outfits are refurbished, the PBCFF will identify a worthy youth group to receive the tackle. "We have worked with dozens of area youth groups through the years during our annual Kids Fishing Day program for underprivileged children, so finding the kids will be no problem. All we need now is the tackle," said WPBFC's executive director, Tom Twyford.

Hotel Chicago Spin casting and spinning tackle is the gear that is needed most of all for the youngsters. However, bait-casting outfits and light to medium conventional tackle will also be accepted. Any gear that is not practical for kids to use, like heavy trolling tackle, for example, will be donated to the PBCFF/CCA annual Palm Beach Marine Marketplace event benefiting local marine conservation and youth education efforts.
