During the 16th and 17th centuries the Caribbean islands and their inhabitants played unwilling hosts to an epic struggle from the Old World. British, Spanish, French, Dutch and even Danish fought to hold and recapture islands for wealth and crown. Language and location names are the remaining legacy of those violent times.

Hotel Booking Most islands have since become fully or partially independent, a process especially encouraged by the British. France, on the other hand, took the opposite approach by incorporating its Caribbean territories into the country. Thus, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and others are politically, if not geographically, part of France. The French West Indians are therefore European Community Citizens with the West Indies' highest living standards and citizenship status anywhere in Europe. Here you will find three-lane highways, cutting-edge hospitals and French shopping malls.

Cheap Hotel The bigger islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe offer a rugged, spectacular contrast. Densely forested mountains, volcanoes and waterfalls are dramatic features of both islands. Industry and agriculture provide employment outside tourism, and there is little desire for independence here. Although the islands cannot boast the Caribbean's best beaches, visitors are safe and free from aggressive selling or begging.
