NORTHEASTNORTHEASTAuthor: Joe Julavits * Nighttime is the bright time for seatrout in our region. The fish hunker down around docks on tidal rivers and the Intracoastal Waterway, lying in wait for small baitfish attracted by the lights. "The stronger the light, the better," says inshore guide Larry Miniard of Palm Valley. "You do best around high tide because the intensity of the light in the water is better." Throwing glass-minnow-imitating flies, small jigs or live bait, Miniard targets the night bite around docks in areas such as Jacksonville's Heckscher Drive along the St. Johns River, the Palm Valley stretch of the waterway and the St. Augustine bayfront. Daytona Beach-area docks also hold trout at night. Trout also keep daytime hours in the north end of Mosquito Lagoon, slurping down noisy pigfish baits in such spots as Tiger Shoal and Tiger Basin. Hotel Booking * This is the month for smokers and snakes - king mackerel, that is. Generally speaking, the smaller fish - snakes under 15 pounds or so - hold on the artificial reefs off northeast Florida, while the big 'uns - smokers - hug the beaches and inlets. "Look for the combination of bait, water temperature in the mid- to high 70s and good water clarity," advises Jacksonville kingfisher Hobart Joost, who runs the annual Tournament Fisherman's Championship out of Beach Marine. For smokers, Joost pulls his live pogy baits in such bountiful beach spots as Fernandina Inlet, Nassau Sound, the Chum Hole, the Southeast Hole, Red Tops, the Captain's House and Matanzas Inlet. The kings will sometimes cross you up, though - last year's winning aggregate catch in the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament came from H.H. Reef, about 15 miles off the beach. > Travel Travel Travel Adventure in Botswana We offer adventure, safari and travel. All Budapest Hotels Book your hotel in Budapest online and save up to 50%. Off Port Canaveral, areas to work include Chris Benson, 8A and Pelican Flats reefs. And don't ignore the port itself. Last year at this time, Capt. Jim Ross guided a party to a 40-pound king inside Port Canaveral. We have a large selection of Paris travel maps available to purchase online. You can browse these by clicking here. Cheap Hotel * You won't find a better daily double than tarpon and snook, and Melbourne-area anglers can tangle with both in the backcountry creeks and canals that border the Indian River. On the western shoreline, try the canals in Satellite Beach; on the eastern side, hit Crane Creek, Turkey Creek and the Eau Gallie and Sebastian rivers. "You're looking for snook on the shoreline, rolling tarpon in the center," says Steve Waschka of Harry Goode's Outdoor Shop in Melbourne. Plugs, flies and live bait all can be effective, and you may also pop a redfish or two. Tarpon - from a few pounds to 30-plus - are a hoot on light tackle. "They're the 'fun-size' tarpon," Waschka says. Discount Hotels in Bangkok Thailand.! Dave Rogers at the Fishin' Shack in Daytona Beach says, "Mangroves bite real good this month on the full moon on wrecks in 65 to 80 feet of water." The full moon comes our way on July 9. Hotel Chicago Dock Talk Online Booking * Capt. Joe Richard of Gainesville, who wrote The Kingfish Bible, describes the spectacle known as the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament as the "mother of all king tournaments." And with a potential field each year of 1,000 boats and a top prize of $50,000, who can argue with that assessment? This year's 18th annual version, set for July 17-18, promises to live up to the billing with a new permanent site (Sisters Creek Marina), a new major sponsor (BellSouth) and an extra incentive for anglers: Anyone entered in the tournament who catches one of five tagged kingfish during the two-day competition wins $25,000. And there's more: If one of those tagged kings is caught any time after the tournament - no matter where it may take place - it'll fetch $1,000. "A lot of people are excited about this year's event," says tournament official Faye Adams. "We're going to get 1,000 boats." Travel Health Insurance * You've read the ad claims about reel drags that will stop a truck? David Lambert of Jacksonville, a fly-casting instructor at Jacksonville's Downstream Outfitters, stopped a Chevy station wagon. Recently Lambert was giving a casting lesson outside the shop near a major roadway when, on his back cast, his line shot across the hood of the moving car and became entangled in the grill. "I started to palm the reel, then realized I wasn't going to stop this thing," Lambert says. But the driver, seeing the strange line stretched across her hood, ultimately stopped. "She was way into my backing," Lambert deadpans. "Previous to this, a Mazda RX-7 represented my largest catch." Hotel Reservation * Speaking of car catching: Jacksonville's Capt. Carl Hardy from the Inshore Saltwater Anglers Club based in Jacksonville witnessed a woman, fishing off the Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine, who snagged a passing Volkswagen on her back cast. "It jerked the rod right out of her hands and dragged it over the bridge," Hardy says. Disconcerted, the woman threw her hands in the air and suffered a glare from her husband, who stood nearby. "I chased the car, caught up with it and returned the rod to her like a good Samaritan," says Hardy. "Then I laughed until tears filled my eyes."
