International Travel Medical                     Early life stress has been reported to alter the behaviors and the neurochemical properties of the adult animals and modify the responsitivity to many psychotropic agents. The present study determined whether early life stress (social isolation from weaning) alters the behavioral response produced by a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, N^G-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) in the open field test.

New York Hotel                     Methods : Male Wistar rats were raised from weaning either alone (isolation rearing) or groups of five rats/cage (social rearing). After five weeks, both socially and isolation reared rats were placed individually into a circular open field arena under high light condition (500 lux) for a 5 min test.

Online Travel Booking                     Results : Under high light condition, untreated isolation reared rats exhibited hypolocomotor activity (as indicated by reduction of total zone transitions) and reared less than socially reared rats. Both socially and isolation reared rats spent more time in the outer zone (P<0.05), however, isolation reared rats spent longer time in the inner zone than the socially reared rats. Systemic administration of L-NAME (10 and 25 mg/kg i.p.) decreased locomotor activity in socially reared rats, but had no effect on the isolation reared rats. L-NAME significantly reduced the number of reared and time spent on the inner zone of the circular open field arena in both socially and isolation reared rats, however, these effects were more pronounced in the isolation reared rats.

This finding thus shows that stress could play a role in the modulation of nitric oxide in the central nervous system.
