Another way of asking this question is has Pius XII s vision for Catholic biblical studies been realized or was it a colossal mistake to allow critical methods to gain preeminence in the Church Many people would look at historical criticism and wonder whether anything has been learned by the new techniques. A person could not be faulted for believing that historical criticism as it has been practiced has only served to cast doubt over many biblical teachings that were once accepted without difficulty. Benedict himself has often spoken critically of the hermeneutics of suspicion which seems to corrode the modern approach to biblical text. But, for Benedict, returning to a pre-critical era in which the knowledge gained over the past two centuries is discarded is simply not an option for Catholic biblical studies. [3] To run from history and historical questions is ultimately to run from the incarnate nature of God s word a maneuver no less repugnant to faith than denying the humanity of Jesus. The very humanity of Scripture is the sole means to attain to its divinity and yet it is just this humanity that makes possible the useful employment of modern scholarly tools inasmuch as the same tools have been used to penetrate the depths of other ancient literature. Moreover, one cannot effectively address Jesus to the contemporary age if one ignores the fact that modern man does indeed dare to ask if Jesus really was the sort of person that the gospels make him out to be. And no one with even a casual exposure to popular literature, movies and cable TV shows can deny that the Jesus of the Bible is only one of many available for public consumption. The fact that the Church for the first seventeen centuries flourished without facing these sorts of historical challenges does not mean that they can be avoided now. [4] hotel booking In truth, the situation in Catholic biblical scholarship is a bit better than it was a generation ago. After years of throwing every possible skepticism at the Gospel stories, most scholars today no longer doubt the basic historical character of a good portion of the Gospel accounts of Jesus many miracles, or the gospel accounts of his passion. Even the Resurrection, formerly relegated to mystical subjectivism, is frequently treated to be in some sense historical, so as to account for the historical fact of the early Church s faith. Few believe that the basic portrayal of Jesus in the Gospels is a total fabrication of the New Testament writers and the early Church. The much-publicized Jesus Seminar, once darling of the media, does not represent most Catholic New Testament scholarship. The very fact that the more revisionist reconstructions of Jesus must resort to hypothetical reconstructions of non-canonical texts (e.g. Q and the gospel of Thomas) is a tacit concession to one striking fact: the synoptic gospels, even when read critically, vindicate the traditional portrait of Jesus at least in its broad contours. The Bultmannian flight from history is seen today as quite pass and unnecessary. travel agency There are about 25 pages of quotations from Ratzinger s own works on a variety of topics at the end of the book. These topics include remarks on the dictatorship of relativism, Western self-hatred, the UN and the war in Iraq, war and peace, politics, Beethoven, and beauty. It is clear that although our new Holy Father is above all a theologian, he is also an intellectual who has not hesitated to reflect and speak on a wide range of moral, social, and cultural issues. He has a very perceptive and penetrating intellect and also a warm heart that can express much wisdom in only a few words. cheap hotel Home| About HPR | Editorial | Special Offer | Book Reviews flight booking Encouragement for MothersMY CUP OF TEA: MUSINGS OF A CATHOLIC MOM. By Danielle Bean (Daughters of St. Paul, 50 St. Paul s Ave., Boston, Mass. 02130, 2005), 180 pp. $15.95. A woman can be an outstanding lawyer, doctor, or executive and still be a failure as a person. But a woman cannot be an outstanding mother and a failure as a person. Thus, the vocation of motherhood can fulfill a woman in a way that no profession can. My Cup of Tea illustrates this truth in a concrete and good -humored way, offering a wonderful antidote to the destructive undervaluing of motherhood in our culture. Danielle Bean, a mother of six young children, three boys and three girls, is a gifted writer. To all of us familiar with her monthly columns in the National Catholic Register, this book is a welcome collection. With charming warmth and freshness, she captures eloquently the beauty, simplicity, and grace filled character of every day life in a happy family. This work is destined to bring consolation and encouragement to the many beleaguered mothers and fathers struggling to pass on the Catholic faith to the next generation. travel agent Mrs. Bean s adventures are spiritually uplifting without being preachy. Instead of complaining about her motherly stresses, frustrations, hardships, and crosses, she laughs at them, and invites the reader to laugh along with her. One reads some of her pages with hilarity, others with a lump in the throat. Every chapter will bring a flash of recognition to Catholic moms: Yes, I know that feeling! I ve been there. Every episode is a morale booster for an audience sorely in need of knowing they are not alone and that someone understands and can articulate the nobility of motherhood. hotel chicago This book is not just for moms, however. I am not a mother and I found every one of the 30 short chapters delightful and edifying. Reading My Cup of Tea will help husbands better appreciate their wives. Priests can draw from it an understanding of the sacrifices and joys of modern married life that will help them counsel the faithful. Each chapter is only a few pages long the perfect length for a busy mom or a busy priest. online booking Although hard to put aside, My Cup of Tea was not meant to be read at one sitting. That would be like trying to visit the Louvre on a speeding motorcycle, or trying to consume 30 exquisite desserts at one sitting. You ll get indigestion even if the portions are small. No. You must savor this work. Limit yourself to one reflection per day. Make yourself a cup of tea, relax, and enjoy. travel health insurance The Very Best of James Galway Code: VBJG-D The Voice (CD) Code: TV-D Through His Mother's Eyes Code: THM-C Your Price: $6.95 Tiny Hands, Precious Feet Code: THPC-D Your Price: $14.95 What I Wanted to Say Code: WIWS-D What Now America Code: WNA-C Your Price: $24.95 Women in Chant Code: WIC-D 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | Page 7 | 8 | 9 Copyright 2004 by Ignatius Press Tears from Heaven Code: TEARS-D Your Price: $18.95 Thank God for Life Code: TGFL-C Format: Cassette Your Price: $6.95 The Cambridge Singers Collection - CD Code: CSC-D Your Price: $8.95 The Chaplet of Divine Mercy - CD Code: CHAP-D Your Price: $14.95 The Everlasting Man (Book on tape) Code: 300-C Your Price: $19.95 The Holy Rosary with Mother Angelica Code: HRMA-C The Holy Rosary with Mother Angelica (CD) Code: HRMA-D The Irish Tenors Code: ITBE-C The Irish Tenors (CD) Code: ITBE-D Your Price: $11.95 The Irish Tenors: Ellis Island Code: ITEI-D The Irish Tenors: Home for Christmas Code: ITHC-D 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | Page 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 Palestrina Code: PALE-D Your Price: $16.95 Placido Domingo: Sacred Songs Code: PDSS-D Rediscovered Masterpieces Code: RM-C Your Price: $6.95 Rejoice in the Lord - Vol I Code: RIL-D Your Price: $9.95 Code: RIL-C Your Price: $3.95 Requiem and Magnificat Code: RJR-D Your Price: $17.95 Sacred Songs of Russia - CD Code: SSR-D Silent Night: A Christmas in Rome Code: SNCR-C Your Price: $11.95 Simple Kyriale - CD Code: SIMK-D Simple Things - CD Code: STJB-D Sing, Ye Heavens Code: SYH-D 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Page 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 Legends Code: LEG-C Format: Cassette Your Price: $6.95 Legends - CD Code: LEG-D Your Price: $11.95 Let All Together Praise Code: LATP-C Your Price: $5.49 Lighten Up Code: LU-C Code: LU-D Merciful Mother - CD Code: MMSW-D More Sublime Chant Code: MSC-C Your Price: $5.95 Code: MSC-D Mozart Requeim - CD Code: MOZR-D My Favorite Prayers Code: MYFP-C O Magnum Mysterium Code: OMM-D Your Price: $10.95 Ocean of Mercy Code: OCEM-C 1 | 2 | 3 | Page 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 Copyright 2004 by Ignatius Press Gentle Joy Code: GJ-C Your Price: $10.95 Gift of Love Code: GOL-D Your Price: $16.95 Gloria - CD Code: GLOR-D Your Price: $8.95 Gregorian Melodies - CD Code: GM-D Hail Queen of Heaven Code: HQH-D Your Price: $14.95 Handel: Great Choruses from the MessiahFinally, Professor Vogt discerns the difference between Christian hope and false optimism. While false optimism hides the truth about terminal disease from a patient, exaggerates longevity as an absolute value, pretends You won t die from this now, or imagines with the next technological advance suffering and even death might be defeated enemies, Christian hope promises eternal life a new experience rather than a continuation of life in a fallen world. The virtue of hope depends on God s Divine Providence: the hairs of our head are numbered, God can bring good out of evil, Christ suffers with all who die, God cares for each human soul, and God is mercy and love. For Christian hope is rooted in the faith that after we experience the real negativity that is a part of living in a finite, fallen world, there is still God who is eternal, and who has promised eternal fellowship to us. hotel reservation In short, this outstanding book restores man s relationship to God in the act of dying and proves that the Church is not only an expert on human nature but also an authority on the meaning of all the profound mysteries of human experience from birth to death. The art of dying is not a matter of privacy between a physician and a patient, not a contract or living will between a patient and the extended family, and not a matter of self-determination on the part of the terminally ill but the most intimate of relationships between a child of God and a loving savior who modeled the real meaning of compassion, hope, faith, and patience and who taught man not only how to live well but also to die nobly. In a substantive, scholarly, and most readable style, Professor Vogt uncovers the riches of the Christian tradition that offers more truth on the reality of dying than all the contemporary literature that attempts to remove the sting of death or rationalizes the necessity for physician-assisted suicide. london hotel booking Home| About HPR | Editorial | Special Offer | Book Reviews discount travel The Role of Faith in CultureTRAGEDY UNDER GRACE: REINHOLD SCHNEIDER ON THE EXPERIENCE OF THE WEST. By Hans Urs von Balthasar (A Communio Book; Ignatius Press, P.O. Box 1339, Ft. Collins, Colo. 80522, 1997) 295 pp. PB $11.95. What should a person of deep culture but no faith do when realization of the West s spiritual collapse suddenly dawns in his mind and becomes an unshakable conviction Should he retreat to the protected groves of academe and protest against the dying of the light Follow Voltaire s Candide and cultivate his own garden Give up in despair and end it all Reinhold Schneider historian, novelist, and poet came to feel the inner emptiness of the modern West very sharply. His scholarly analysis of the tragic conflicts of European history gave him a keen sense of the role faith plays in culture even before he was a man of the faith himself. But it was the surprising action of grace within that led him to Christ and the Church and enabled him to develop a profound interpretation of history in the light of the Cross. orlando hotel The author offers his reflections on the three temptations of Jesus in the wilderness and helps the reader to see the true humanity of the God Man. There is a short meditation on the Eucharist as the Bread of Life which he delivered for a Corpus Christi celebration. booking agency Since 1985 there has been a lot of writing about the notion of Communio as a key to understanding the documents of Vatican II. Cardinal Ratzinger offers an essay on that topic and relates it to Holy Communion and the notion of solidarity in the Church which was dear to the heart of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. international travel medical In the last part of the book the Cardinal offers his evaluation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which, apparently, was written ten years after its publication in 1992. He sees the Catechism as a significant contribution to the health of the Church and the new evangelization called for by his predecessor. Of course, he was head of the group of bishops that finally composed the Catechism so he was very much involved in the creation of the book. new york hotel Ignatius Press has more than 25 books in English by Cardinal Ratzinger. Perhaps the best one to read for an understanding of the thinking of the new pope is the famous The Ratzinger Report (1985). But this small volume, which contains his thinking of the past few years before becoming pope, offers a window to the theology and spirituality of the man whom divine providence has given us to lead the Church in the first part of the new millennium. online travel booking Since Pope Benedict XVI is a scholar and professor, I suspect that we will see more books coming from him as he gives leadership to the Church as the Vicar of Christ. This book traces the history of the Roman Liturgy, with emphasis on the Mass, from the beginning of Catholicism to the Second Vatican Council (1962-65). The history is divided into three phases: from the beginning up to 1900; 1900 1948; 1948 1965. In each part the author deals with all the significant developments and passes judgment on them. air deccan booking The author realizes that the Liturgy is a privileged expression of our faith, and that its organic development must be preserved at all costs. One principal that is stressed is that the liturgy should be changed only in non-essentials and only when absolutely necessary. He quotes with approval: History has proved a thousand times that there is nothing more dangerous for a religion, nothing is more likely to result in discontent, incertitude, division, and apostasy, than interference with the Liturgy and consequently with religious sensibility (p. 285). las vegas nevada travel monebaggasseAs "The only independent hostel booking site with no booking fees", Hostel Bookers aims to be the number one site for student travel, backpackers and the general traveller.
