National NewsNational NewsDate 10/14/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: NewsMan Goes on Trial for Murder of Shepard LARAMIE, Wyo. - The defense attorney for the Matthew Shepard murder trial claim that the actions of Aaron McKinney, 22 were affected by drugs and alcohol and not motivated by anti-gay hatred, which has previously been stated as the casuse of his violent behavior. McKinney could be sentenced to death if convicted for the murder of Matthew Shepard. Shepard, 21, a University of Wyoming freshman, died a year ago Oct. 12, after he was lured out of a bar, driven out to the frozen prairie, and pistol-whipped into a coma. Russell Henderson, 22, McKinney's co-defendant, pleaded guilty to murder and is serving life in prison. Graceland's Garage Sale LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas held a spectacular event on Oct. 9, 10, and 11 that people have dubbed "Graceland's garage sale." There were approximately 400 attendees at the event and prices ranged from $750 for a Christmas card photograph of Elvis and Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's personal manager. Another highlight of the sale was a $65,000 black jumpsuit with a mint green neckline, a relic from Presley's life in the 1970s. Proceeds from the auction will help create Presley Place, a housing project for homeless in Memphis, Tenn. Elvis died in Memphis in 1977 at age 42. Woman defeats Canadian man in battle of the sexes SEATTLE, Wash. - Margaret "Tiger" MacGregor defeated her Canadian male opponent, Loi Chow, in a battle of the sexes boxing match held Oct. 10 in Seattle. This was the first sanctioned professional bout between a man and a woman. "This is the biggest day of my life," said MacGregor. King of Pop files for divorce LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Micheal Jackson is getting divorced from his wife of three years, Debbie Rowe. Rowe is Jackson's second marriage, after a past marriage to Lisa Marie Preseley.
