Travel Agency Barry S. Sternlicht is the chairman and chief executive officer of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., one of the world`s largest hotel and leisure companies with more than 700 hotels in 80 countries worldwide. Starwood`s acquisition of ITT Sheraton and Westin Hotels & Resorts in early 1998 gave birth to the hotel corporation as it is known today, which employs more than 120,000 people under six premier global brands including Sheraton, Westin, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, Four Points and W Hotels. One of the youngest and most respected leaders in the hotel and leisure industry today, Barry places a strong emphasis on his humanitarian efforts as he does his business pursuits. As Corporate Chairman of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation`s Manhattan "Walk to Cure Diabetes" for the past two years, he has been consecutively named the top individual fund raiser and led the Starwood team to the position of Top Team award, raising close to $1.4 million for the charity. Under Barry`s direction, the 1999 Big Apple Circus Annual Gala Benefit at Lincoln Center was the most financially successful in its 22-year history. Recently, Barry made a five-year commitment to General Colin Powell, promising that 25,000 Starwood employees will dedicate over 40,000 hours to the "America`s Promise" effort, through job shadowing and mentoring programs, as well as donating community service hours to various charitable organizations. Barry Sternlicht was born in 1960 and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. He received his BA, magna cum laude, with honors from Brown University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He later earned an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School with first and second year honors. In May 1999 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration in Hospitality Management from Johnson & Wales University. Barry has been credited as a dynamic and innovative hotel leader, inspiring new products and programs with immediate global appeal, including a revolutionary new guest room design for Sheraton, the creation of Westin`s "Heavenly Bed," and the launch of the Starwood Preferred Guest Program, which less than four months after its birth, was named the #1 hotel loyalty program in the world as reported by USA Today. Additionally, Barry launched the first new hotel brand in recent history, W Hotels. Since the highly publicized debut of the W New York in December of 1998, W has expanded into such key markets as San Francisco, Seattle, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago and Honolulu, with two additional hotels in Manhattan. The brand`s first international component, the W Sydney, is planned for later in 2000. Barry currently serves on the board of U.S. Franchise Systems and the Juvenile Diabetes International Foundation. He is a member of the Young Presidents Organization, Urban Land Institute, Fairfield County Junior Achievement, the Board of Governors of NAREIT, and the Board of Directors of the Center for Christian-Jewish Understanding. Barry and his wife Mimi reside in Greenwich, Connecticut with their three children.
