Glimmer: Music from and inspired by the motion pictureGlimmer: Music from and inspired by the motion pictureDate 5/9/2002 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & CulturePosters line the various walls of buildings around campus. The announcement reads, "Glimmer. Music from and inspired by the motion picture." The average passerby may think that they are seeing an advertisement for a performance of the music from Mariah Carey's first movie, but that's not it not at all. In fact, the music is for a piano recital to be performed by Mark Whelan ('02). "Glimmer is a fantasy tale constructed primarily of visions and daydreams during my youthful years," said Whelan. Whelan's piano recital will be performed in Jenson-Noble Recital Hall on Sunday May 12, at 7:30 p.m. In eighth grade, Whelan started improvising songs for some of his favorite comic books. The first thing he ever composed was for an animated movie version of Elfquest. He even went as far as approaching the comic book author with his idea. However, he only got the response of, "that's really nice, but we got Hans Zimmer to do the music." The main theme of composition kept evolving but was put away until the idea for Glimmer came around during his first year of college. "The story and characters are developed, but the movie hasn't been started," said Whelan. "The music comes first and then the story." This is Whelan's most accomplished work to date and has never been performed formally. "Glimmer is my newest and most passionate score that I have been working on," said Whelan. "Much less dark and cynical." "I've never felt competent as a writer," said Whelan, "but I have always been comfortable with my drawings and music." -- Jenny Rogers News Editor Share this:More about:
