Travel Agency (AXcess News) Washington - President Bush pressed lawmakers Wednesday to come to an agreement between the House and Senate on extending the tax cuts on capital gains and corporate dividends. The legislation, which both the House and Senate are close to agreements over, would also give families a one-year moratorium on the alternative minimum tax, or AMT. Flight Booking Lawmakers have been going back and forth in attempting to negotiate terms to a permanent tax cut in an effort to reconcile differences between competing versions of the tax bill. The process has been difficult and on going for months following a provision in last year's Congressional budget resolution that in effect prevents filibuster if the tax bill did not exceed $70 billion over ten years. Students don't usually earn much, so their tax bracket should be relatively low, therefore you will still make money using this plan even if Congress doesn't extend all the tax breaks. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) the senior Democrat on the tax-writing Finance Committee. London Hotel Booking Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said, "Some members on the other side of the aisle are criticizing the agreement in principle before the ink is even dry. I want to remind them that about half of the net tax relief in the package, $34 billion, goes to keeping more than 15 million taxpaying families out of the AMT." Discount Travel The AMT, or alternative minimum tax, has never been adjusted for inflation. By Patching it, around 4 million taxpayers last year were subject to the AMT. Without an extension, the government forecasts 19 million filers would be forced to pay the higher tax in 2006. Orlando Hotel While Democrats are for extending the AMT, they oppose extending the investor tax breaks, claiming unfairly benefits the nation's wealthy. Booking Agency The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities says the bulk of the tax cuts are going to high-income households and that most households with small- business income are not in this high-income group.
