Hotel Booking The union representing Essex County jail guards sued the state Department of Corrections yesterday, alleging that guards and inmates would be exposed to dangerous environmental contamination at a new jail being built in an industrial section of Newark.

Travel Agency In the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Newark, the Police Benevolent Association Local 157 asked the court to issue an injunction stopping construction of the new Essex Corrections Facility on Doremus Avenue.

Cheap Hotel The site of the jail is contaminated with toxins that have been capped, and it is surrounded by refineries, chemical plants and other industrial facilities, the guards said. They alleged they would be at risk from the toxins lurking underneath the jail -- which could seep into the jail during floods -- and from industrial accidents and routine emissions at the facilities in the area.

Travel agents obtain some of their information from the same sources as online booking sites such as Orbitz and Travelocity. They also receive daily emails and faxes with new specials from resorts and hotels that may not be published on the internet. Travel agents can also call a place directly to see if they can work out other kinds of special deals for you, something an online site can’t do.

Flight Booking "The site smells of a mixture of rotten eggs and volatile substances all of the time," the lawsuit alleged. "It has an ongoing egglike and gluelike smell due to the surrounding area."

Travel Agent Essex County Administrator Joseph Martin said the site was safe.

New travel plans must be reserved and travel completed one (1) year from the original booking date and are subject to availability.

Hotel Chicago "Clearly, we share the concerns of the corrections officers for a safe and healthy environment," Martin said. "Not only will they find it sound environmentally, but also safe."

Online Booking The union actually joined a lawsuit filed years ago by Essex County jail inmates over confinement conditions, and alleged the contaminated conditions would be inhumane to inmates. Some 2,500 inmates and 1,000 corrections officers, along with judges, lawyers, nurses, doctors, members of the public and government officials would be at risk at the site, the union said.

Travel Health Insurance But one inmate advocate, T. Gary Mitchell, said he had studied the cleanup of the site and come to the conclusion that it is safe.

Hotel Reservation "The standards that the Department of Environmental Protection established appear to be adequate and efficient to address all known health concerns," Mitchell said yesterday in an interview. He added that he is asking the county to create a system to monitor health issues that may come up in the future.

London Hotel Booking In the suit, the union cataloged a number of industrial accidents at nearby facilities, along with occasions on which people visiting or working in the area fell ill for reasons that could have been related to pollution exposure.

Discount Travel "We know that people have been knocked unconscious," said Stuart Lieberman, attorney for the union.

Orlando Hotel The guards also alleged the county has not detailed an emergency evacuation plan.

Booking Agency "It should be noted that when it comes to evacuations, correction officers do not leave first. They have to leave last after all the prisoners have left," the suit said.
