Flightless Bird Fails To Cross Route 80

Hotel Booking In what might have been the first accident of its kind in New Jersey, and what was certainly an unusual one, a large flightless bird called an emu tried to run across Route 80 and was killed when it collided with a trailer.

A visitor centre has information about the Wall years, while a chapel is dedicated to the 80 or so victims that died trying to cross it.

Travel Agency State police said they were still looking on Monday for the owner of the emu. They said the bird ran into a trailer being pulled by an SUV on the highway's eastbound lanes at 6:15 p.m. Sunday. The driver was uninjured, police said. Police had no information Monday about whether the trailer suffered any damage.

Cheap Hotel Emus, native to Australia, grow to be as much as six feet tall and 135 pounds. They also are considered nimble birds that run as fast as 30 mph, and have been known to travel hundreds of miles.

The emu is a large, flightless bird indigenous to Australia, and emu oil has become an important component of the Australian economy.

Flight Booking Police did not have information on Monday about the size of the emu killed on Route 80. They also were left with something of a mystery:

Occasionally, changes may have to be made to these routes prior to travel. Generally this would be due to events such as strike, fault on route, weather conditions etc. If we cannot operate an itinerary due to not being able to get across the channel by one route we will always endeavour to continue the tour by using an alternative crossing. If possible, you would be notified of the change before travel.

Hotel Reservation They also said that they never before heard of a car hitting an emu.

London Hotel Booking Emus, second in size among birds to the ostrich, which also is flightless, are raised not only for their meat, but for oils extracted when they are slaughtered. The oils are marketed as skin products. Aboriginal Australians once believed the universe was created from an exploding emu egg, according to a Web site that markets emu oil.

Discount Travel State officials said emus used to require permits because they were considered exotic animals, but that's no longer the case. A state Department of Agriculture official said no one knows how many emus are in the state and that, as a livestock animal, they require no permit.

Orlando Hotel Betty Wysocki, the animal control officer for several Warren County towns, said she was called to trap an escaped emu in Oxford years ago and had a tough time catching it because it was so fast. She said no one came forward to claim the emu so it was given to a Warren County farmer who raised emus.

Booking Agency "They make a sound like "boom, boom, boom'" Wysocki said. "When we dropped the emu off, and it heard that sound, it went running to the other emus. It was very happy."
